Staying Firm In Faith

Staying Firm In Faith

My sink overflowed with fresh finds gathered from local gardens. Beets and kale, carrots, and radishes bursting over the top of my sink onto the counter. A visual representation of harvest and the goodness of God. Galatians 6:9 reminds us to not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest.

In Paul’s letter to the Galatian church, he reminds them to stay firm in their faith. Stay firm in the ways of Jesus and his message. For the Galatians, there was outside pressure to dilute the message and mission of Jesus. The temptation for the Galatians was to turn from the message they had received and build walls in and around the framework of the church. Paul wrote this letter to remind the church of the freedom offered to them through the completed work of Jesus, Messiah! Galatians 5:1 tells us “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened by the yoke of slavery”.

Paul spoke of slavery as the slavery of the law and of religious systems. But we can also see slavery today in numerous forms. Whether it be slavery to anxiety, depression, addiction or even the slavery of performing or perfectionism. God’s desire for our lives is that they be lived in freedom through the sacrifice of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Free from the burden of slavery – in any form.

Freedom takes perseverance, perseverance propelled by courage, empowerment, and the power of the Holy Spirit. You will not always be motivated to do what is good and what is right in the eyes of Lord. You will not always be motivated to do what is good and right for your life, but God reminds us in his word that we reap what we sow.

When feelings of discouragement tempt us to wonder, to give up or give in, or even when we’re tempted to seek righteousness outside of Christ, we can be strengthened to know the promise of God’s word. God’s blessing to us, is abundant freedom in Christ. That promise is for today. However, as we persevere for his kingdom, we must also stay firm in him. Remembering that the day you plant the seed will not be the day you reap the harvest.

Stay firm in the freedom offered to you through the saving grace of Jesus Christ, as you continue to abide in his abundant love and mercy.
